42.2km Marathon

Get around the kids' mini course as fast as your legs will carry you.

Run in the 10km event plus put together a team of four.

Cycling Options

Entry fee varies with distance

$40 or $20 (Juniors U16 $5)

Cyclists are welcome to enter the 10km or half marathon events PLUS two new distances - 36km or 72km.  The 36km course starts at the main Breakaways lookout and follows the gravel road along the dog fence nearly 19km to Kempe Road and then returns.  The 72km option is two laps of this course.  Visiting cyclists will also have the opportunity to participate in an even longer 120km self-managed 'freedom ride' on Sunday 22nd May, guided by local cycling enthusiasts.

Shuttle bus timetable

The OZ Minerals Shuttle Bus leaves Coober Pedy for the 30 minute trip to the starting line from outside the Council Offices on Hutchison street at.....

 

8am, 9am, 10am, 12 noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm

 

The OZ Minerals Shuttle Bus leaves the Breakaways for the return journey to Coober Pedy at...... 

 

8.30am, 9.30am, 10.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm 

 

The bus has a tight schedule to maintain so please don't be late or the bus will leave without you!

Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, Via Stuart Highway, 30km north of Coober Pedy, South Australia.

The 2022 course is an out and back track, running from the main lookout, to Angkata then back and down the hill, past Two Dogs, across the "moon plain" and alongside the dingo fence. Check out the route or download a gpx file.

Aid stations

There are aid stations along the length of the 10.5km track. Stations are manned, have first aid provisions, radios, drinks/nibbles and toilets.

Prams and dogs

Competitors may push a pram or take their dog on the course. Dogs must be on a lead at all times. Nuisance dogs will be removed from the park.

Children in prams must be registered for insurance purposes but no entry fee is required.

Competitors with prams or dogs must start at the rear of the pack and ensure they do not get in the way of other runners.

Pre-qualification

Competitors are able to enter any of the distances. All runners in the marathon must be at least 18 years of age.  All riders in the 37.5 km or 70 km bike ride must be 16 years or over. 

Running is hard work - competitors are expected to be physically fit and suitably trained.

Entry process

Entries will be accepted on the day prior to the start of each event.

Late entries including on-the-day entries:

  • will attract an additional $10 fee

  • must be made at least 30 mins before the scheduled start time of each event

  • are CASH ONLY.

All entries must be paid before race number collection.

*Special entry rates for local young runners

Thanks to people who love running from all around Australia, money has been raised to cover the entry fees for local young runners.

If you are U16 years of age and live in Coober Pedy or surrounding areas, you can enter the 10km, 5km or Mini Bolt event for FREE. But if your legs are made for running and you want to have a go at the Half Marathon, you can take part by paying the discounted $5.00 entry.

Just fill out your registration form and enter as a local junior.

Shuttle buses

Free shuttle buses run to and from the park during the event.​ Competitors, families and community members can use this service. Competitors will be given priority on early buses.

Children must be accompanied by a carer who is 16 years of age or older. For safety reasons, unaccompanied children under 16 will not be permitted to travel on the shuttle buses.

A timetable will be added prior to the event.
